Renovation is a great approach towards your house or apartment. It could increase the value of your home if you ever decide to sell it. Remodeling can make your living place more comfortable for you and your family so that it could respond better to your needs. May be you think that you can have a career right where you are and you like your job, your kids are happy at their school, your family is growing or you are taking a relative or friend to live with you – whatever the reason for your decision, now is the time to consider how to do it. You have two options – to stay in during the renovation or move out.
Renovating vs Moving
What is better for you if you need to change the home you live in – moving out to another place or renovating the one you already have?
- Consider the opportunities that you have. If you want a nicer home see what’s out on the real estate market and plan what would be less costly – remodeling or moving out. Here you also have to think of the expenses you will have if you decide to rent another place during the renovation. If you are doing small reconstructions to your house or apartment like renovating the kitchen, bathroom or living room it may be more efficient to do that than sell and buy a new home.
- Consider the time you will need. How much time will it take you to change your home with a new one and how much time is renovating going to last?
Moving out while Renovating
There are a few reasons to stay in during renovation. First of all, communication with the contractor who is remodeling your home is easier. Every time an issue comes up and you are there it will be solved timely. Secondly, you need to make sure the work is going smooth and well. When the contractor is alone the risk of falling behind schedule and encountering higher expenses is bigger. There are also positive sides of moving out. See them below:
Moving out during Home Renovation
- The problems of moving out are costs in the first place. What could decrease your expenses in this respect is if you could find a place to stay at your friends or relatives. May be someone has a guest room that is not being used or an empty room. Of course this is something you can ask only a person really close to you – parents, brother or sister, childhood friends so it may not be so easy to achieve.
- If the remodeling is going to take a short period of time you can arrange it and go on a holiday at the same time.
- As the renovation of your home is about to begin, you need to find a home to stay at temporarily as the construction work is going. Sometimes, depending on the area where you live, it could be problematic. One option is to look for such a place in advance – a few months before beginning renovation.

One obligatory thing to do when renovating your home is pack what you won't use. And this is where some help will be of use to you - you can ask movers to come and pack professionally.
- Moving out is not just about finding an affordable place. You also need to think about what you will do with your subscriptions, will you be changing your address, will you cut the phone and internet providers and run them again after renovation or leave it like this.
- Think in terms of distance. You may have to travel longer to work and your kids – to school. If you are moving out during home renovation think about this detail when you are searching for your temporary place to stay.
- Consider how your presence will influence the workers – if you are not in their way they can work quicker.
Staying in
- If you take this decision you need to prepare to experience a lot of noise, dust, dirt and general inconvenience.
- If you want to stay in during the renovation of your home ask the contractor to create an area where there will be no construction work. This is going to be your zone, free of the chaos going on around.
- Set up clearly the working hours of the construction team. They should be well informed about this because you are going to need your privacy as well.
- Prepare part of your belongings for packing – whatever you are not going to use for the remodeling period pack it in plastic sealable bags to keep it away from the dust around. Cover the large furniture as well. You can ask a mover to do the packing for you in order to save time.
- Ask your renovator if they could purify the air during their work or at least clean up some of the mess made during the day before they leave.
- Go to the working area once in a while to keep track on the progress that is going on and answer questions if there are any. Make sure that the contractor can reach you at any moment in time so that you can direct the renovation process if necessary. You can also visit your home when there is no remodeling work going on to see what has been done through the day.
Whatever you choose, try to keep stress away. Whenever things feel too difficult imagine the result you are hoping to achieve – look at the construction plans, the models of new furniture and keep in your mind that picture to help you go through the process. Try to stay calm as much as possible – home renovation is an inconvenience for all members of your family. Make compromises, try to avoid arguments and talk things out in order to prevent this change from influencing your family in a negative way. Renovation is a lot of cost related and often timely work to be done but in the end of the day remember the goals you have for making it – a more beautiful, convenient and cozy home for you and your family.
