When you are moving almost every task you need to perform is a serious job. One of the few things though that are guaranteed to have you enjoy it is the moving party. Yes, why not throw one? Think about this: your neighbors, friends, family, colleagues – people you like to spend time with all in one place. It is surely going to be fun. And you can use the occasion to do some packing, too, for example. Here are a few tips and ideas for a moving party.
Hosting a moving out party
Again, with a good planning you can do it. Begin in a week or two by sending out the invitations. Write in it the date, hour, place and occasion of the party. If you think it is appropriate you can ask your friends to bring a drink with themselves or packing supplies they have but don’t use! That’s going to get you a step ahead with the packing.
During the week or two before it you will have the time to prepare. Certainly a messy living room is not a good party environment so you may have your moving party after a part of the packing so already been done or you have already had a moving sale to get rid of unwanted things. That should also leave more space for people to dance, too.
Make it a thematic party – for example pool party, barbecue party, retro party, etc. If you are moving to Hawaii prepare yourself with garlands from flowers and have someone by the front door to give them to people as they enter. If you are moving to another country, you can place some decoration in your home like things that reminds of it – the flag for example and have a dress code at the party – the colors of the country’s flag. If the party coincides with a holiday use the opportunity – Halloween can be a ball with masks, 4th of July can be patriotic, etc. Use your imagination and enjoy the opportunity to have some fun with your friends before you have moved out far from them. Do you have a friend that loves photographing? Ask him to bring his equipment and take pictures doing the party!

If you need help with moving furniture, stacking boxes by the front door or disconnecting your computer - your friends can help you. Organize a packing party and invite them.
If you decide to make your party in the days before moving day don’t worry for having your kitchen being packed already – even plastic plates and cups will do. People will understand the situation. And after that it is going to be easier to clean – just collect the garbage and no washing of dishes or glasses.
You can make it a packing party
You can pick a few of your best friends, set a date convenient for everyone like a holiday or the weekend, and start the packing! Provided that you got all the packing materials ready as soon as your friends are there you can have a glass of wine, relax, have some snacks, talk and see what you can work out together. Just a little note: if you really want to organize such an event be careful with the food and drinks – red wine may leave stains and pizza may get the fingers oily. So perhaps it would be a good idea to first have a drink and some snacks and then go on with the packing. And it would be good not to invite strangers – you may not want someone you just met to go through your personal belongings. The person may not feel comfortable either.
Any job is easier in a nice company and with pleasant people. Just set aside what you want to be packed and distribute the tasks. It would be easier if you have an inventory list – in that way you can keep track on what’s been packed and easily give the tasks as to what else needs to be packed. Play some music to keep up the good mood. You could pick songs everyone knows so you can also sing!
Make a party for your kids
Your kids may be happy to have one. Since they will not be seeing their friends as often as before having a party for them is a great idea. If your kids were sad for leaving an event like this is very likely to make them feel better. You can invite some of the kids’ parents as well and use the occasion to exchange your new contacts with them. Your kids will be able to keep in touch.
Prepare some games that are appropriate for the kids’ age. If you live in a house they can also play outside in the sun. Also make sure there are some drinks like juice or fruit shakes and treats – kids love them. Just be careful that they don’t have too much sweets or ice-cream as it may not be good for their health. Keep an eye on them when they play for their own safety.
