We hired Personal Touch Moving and Transport out of Rockville, Maryland based on a clean BBB report and no hits on the internet indicating a problem. The quoted cost was fair ($760) for our small move of one-half mile.
On the day of the move, the company which showed up was Metro Van Lines, also out of Rockville, Maryland.
As we needed to move on that day, we did not consider this a problem as the driver indicated the two companies worked closely. The driver assured us the move would be without difficulty.
As the movers began loading the truck, we began to have an uneasy feeling that something was not correct. I inquired as to the cost of the move, I wanted to make sure the cost was consistent with the quoted cost of $760. The driver would not give a firm answer, continually delaying until he had loaded as much as possible onto his truck.
Evenutally, I did stop the guy from loading anything further until I received assurances about the cost. He finally gave a final price, which was over $2,200. The majority of the costs were $1,200 for "packing material". Later I compared the actual material used to retail prices from local moving companies and I had a hard time arriving at a total cost of more than $150, retail.
Once he had my HHGs, much of it but not all, on the truck, the driver said he would be happy to unload the truck. I inquired as to the cost if he unloaded the truck and he said, without shame, $2,200.
The driver would not remove the HHG from the truck or deliver the HHG to the new address until I gave him a valid credit card. He also indicated if we did not provide the card at that moment he would simply drive away. That did not seem realistic since I have no doubt the company would have added exhorbitant storage fees which would have simply compounded the problem.
Under the circumstances, I had the driver deliver the loaded HHG to the new address. As we had stopped the driver from loading anything further, much of our HHGs, which were included in the quote, were not moved. My husband and I spent two miserable days moving the HHG ourselves.
I believe Personal Touch may be a web-site used by Metro Van Lines to disquise the true company and hide the many poor internet reviews about Metro. I visited Personal Touch address and found it to be an office building. I did not see any moving assets, such as a truck.
I would strongly recommend potential customers simply avoid either of these companies at all cost.
